Reason and Power in Modern European Thought

This course gives students a grounding in modern European political philosophy, with a focus on the themes of reason and power. Topics discussed include domination, rationality, sexuality, biopolitics, and accelerationism.

The Idea of Liberty

This course examines conceptions of liberty in history, theory, and practice. It introduces students to liberal, republican, socialist, and libertarian traditions of thought about freedom, and brings these to bear on debates over democracy, security, civil liberties, and feminism.

Ethics and Public Policy

This course investigates the ethical foundations of public policy. It is interdisciplinary in approach — combining philosophical and public policy perspectives on topics such as workfare, drugs, disability, and euthanasia.

Issues in Contemporary Political Philosophy

This is an advanced course in analytical political philosophy, which encourages students to explore ambitious normative questions about how society ought to be organised. It covers debates about liberalism, equality, structural injustice, economic freedom, recognition, democracy, and paternalism.

Ethics and World Politics

This course examines ethical problems with an international or global dimension. It covers terrorism, drone ethics, global justice, the capabilities approach, immigration, human rights, sex trafficking, and climate justice.

Disability: Ethics, Politics, and Public Policy

This is a research-led course investigating the latest developments in the philosophy and politics of disability. It focuses on issues concerning autonomy, agency, and mental capacity.
